Teaching An Old Dog New Tricks

I’ve heard many people (analysts and commentators, writers, friends, etc.) talk about how Terrell Owens and Randy Moss have “grown up and matured.” That is the most laughable thing I’ve ever heard. Do you really believe this? Are you fucking kidding me??

Owens is a guy who has always left it on the field. He’ll never give up on a team, and will always give everything he’s got. However, as history has shown, he most certainly will explode when things start to go south for his team. In San Francisco, he was the perfect teammate for Steve Young. He and Jeff Garcia got along great until Garcia started to become a little inconsistent and the Niners started losing. All of a sudden, Owens was calling Garcia a fag and ripping the entire team apart.

In Philadelphia, Owens and Donovan McNabb were bosom buddies. They appeared on interviews together and ribbed each other, they joked on the sidelines, and they formed one of the top QB/Receiver tandems in the league. This led to much success for the team, and they made it to the Super Bowl. But in that Super Bowl, when McNabb had a sub-par game (in Owens’ opinion), Owens ripped him a new asshole and pitched a fit like a little bitch.

After wearing out his welcome in Philadelphia, Owens moved on to Dallas where he created a ruckus in his first training camp, complained about his coaches, complained about his quarterback, allegedly attempted suicide, and just generally tore the team apart. This year there is a new coach, and the team is 8-1. So, of course, everything is hunky dory. Owens loves his quarterback, he loves his new coach, he loves his offensive coordinator, and he loves his teammates.  Puhleeze…

Randy Moss is different. He is not, and has never been, an “effort” guy. Everyone pretty much agrees that he is the most physically gifted wide receiver in the league. However, he has been notorious for his lack of effort. He admitted that he has quit on many plays, and he’s even left the field before his team’s game was over. He has also criticized everyone in his organization, and has run into his fair share of off-the-field troubles.

Now, he’s on one of the best teams of all time, playing with one of the best quarterbacks of all time. The Patriots are undefeated, and look like they could easily go 19-0. And whaddya know? Randy Moss has become the consummate teammate! What a shock!

This is such bullshit. Each of these assholes is one injured quarterback away from completely dismantling their team. Do you think Terrell Owens would be this much of a locker room angel if he were catching passes from Brad Johnson? Do you think Randy Moss would be such a professional if Matt Cassel were throwing him the ball? I sure as hell don’t. So don’t give me this bullshit about them being mature, and how great they are as teammates. They’re still the same ridiculous assholes that came into the league years ago. If anything, they have regressed, as they’ve been increasingly placated and catered to throughout their careers. I’d never wish an injury on someone, but I would love to see how they’d react if they lost their All-World quarterbacks…
